In 2013, after 34 years combined service in HM Armed Forces and the Metropolitan Police Service, Michael moved from a highly successful career at New Scotland Yard as the OCU Commander of the only dedicated Counter Terrorism Protective Security Command (SO20) in the UK, into a Group Head of Operational Security and Intelligence role in a multi-national financial institution.
Prior to his role in the Corporate Sector, Michael was the Senior National Protective Security Liaison Officer (SNPSLO) for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As part of his role, Michael authored, developed and delivered the London Olympic Counter Terrorism Protective Security Strategy, which involved extensive UK and global interagency collaboration, particularly with US Government, Federal Agencies and Police Forces worldwide.
In 2013, Michael was awarded his Doctorate, for his leadership of the government legal and police team and his ground-breaking research into the use of Counter Terrorism legislation and powers in the protection of the communities of London and the United Kingdom, additionally, Michael has a master’s degree in business management and is a Freeman of the City of London.
In 2015, Michael launched a bespoke risk, security, and crisis management consultancy (6E Consulting Ltd) working with several international organisations, in a wide range of sectors, including policing, sporting event management, cultural, media, governmental and the third sector.
Since January 2017, Michael has been the Strategic Global Security Advisor to Formula 1 Motor Racing with special remit to advise the F1 Board on all matters relating to global safety and security, this includes but is not limited to, crisis management, civil and criminal investigations, strategic liaison with foreign Police, Military, and Intelligence Services, plus providing operational and tactical advice on all forms of terrorism, protest and employee travel safety and security.
Michael has authored several crisis management, protective security and terrorism related papers and articles for leading industry journals and is currently engaged on a number of high-profile security industry related boards, advisory panels and not-for-profit community projects (see below).
In October of 2020, Michael was awarded his Chartered Security Professional (CSyP) status, making him uniquely placed within the security industry as one of only five chartered doctors in the UK Security Industry.
In January 2021, Michael Co-Authored a bespoke Counter Terrorism Awareness Course (Level 5) which has now accessed by over 2000 students from police, military, and the corporate sector.
In terms of corporate governance and leadership, Michael has been appointed as a Non-Executive Director (NED) on several companies and continues to support the wider security industry through his extensive NED portfolio.
As an exponent of continuous professional development, in April of this year, Michael became the first person in Formula 1 to qualify for a Level 5 QNUK Award in Crowd Safety Management, supporting the global safety programme in Crowd Safety, Security and Management.
Since leaving the Police Service in 2013, Michael has worked with several of the world’s largest private and public companies across the globe and has a keen interest in the emerging geo-political threats and risks, especially in the Middle East, Far East and the U.S and the opportunities these locations offer to his professional, academic, and personal growth.
